HaPpY "Snowy" BiRtDaY to my Baby E

Well... It was snowing 4 years ago, the day my sweet baby Eli was born, so it might as well snow every year! We may just have to celebrate half birthdays for you since we've had to cancel the past couple years due to weather.
I think you had a great day today though because you got to have your Daddy, Mommy and brother Will all home to celebrate with. Nobody was leaving in this mess and tomorrow school is canceled again.
We couldn't believe it but you slept until almost 8:30 this morning. Mommy had already planned to have "birthday pancakes" and more for your special day. We kept waiting and when you finally walked in, we started singing to you.. but, you were only interested in what you saw outside and said, "Can Will and I go out and have a snowball fight?" It was a windchill of less than zero, so we kept putting that activity off until we thought it was a little warmer.
You opened presents we had for you and of all, the little green motorcycle was your "favorite"!
Daddy, Will and you played the Wi1, your hot wheels track, basketball and that "green motorcyle". I got lots of good cuddle time with you on the couch.. I'm so thankful you will still cuddle with your Mommy!
We finally agreed to getting out all the ski gear, bundling you and Will up and watching you slide around in the driveway, run through the snow and throw a couple snowballs. That only lasted about 10 minutes before you were both begging to come in.
Tonight after dinner, Daddy made a fire in the fireplace and we watched the video of your birth plus more. I LOVE watching these old videos of my babies and always cry because it was just the most precious time of my life. I enjoy every stage, don't get me wrong, but it's just the sweetest when I can look back at what seems such a short period of time. You both grew up way too fast.. and how I wish I could slow the process!! These past 4 years have been absolutely wonderful watching you grow and become such a "big boy". You've thought you were a big boy since you could talk because you have always looked up to your big brother and wanted to be just like him. You asked me to day if you were four yet and I said "yes, today you are four". You answered, "no, I'm not four yet because I'm not as tall as Will". I had to explain... Will is 7, etc...
Happy, Happy Birthday sweet, Eli... I love you more than you'll ever know!!

Good Bye, Papa

My sweet Papa went into the hospital on December 18th due to breathing problems, was diagnosed with bronchitis but expected to come home the next day. He had a heart attack, was put on a ventilator on the 19th and then died on Wednesday the 22nd. He was laid to rest on the 27th. This is something I wrote and was read by Charlie at his funeral. I was not ready for him to go but am so thankful I got to spend some time with him in November, just before Thanksgiving.

My Dear Papa

For 37 years, I have been blessed to know and love this very special man. As the first grandchild, my memories may go back a little more, but I know many of them are ones the other grandchildren have also experienced… and many we all got to experience together.

When I was young, Papa loved photography. From the time I was born, he was taking pictures of me in addition to others he could practice his hobby on… I’ll never forget his neat dark room he developed pictures in at his home. Although his developing years came to an end, he still almost always had his camera with him.

Then from about the time I could walk, much time was spent at Katy Drug, watching him make lemons(this is what I thought he said when I was little and I asked him what he was doing…making a living) “Making Lemons” was always his answer thereafter. I helped myself to more candy, ice cream and sodas than I ever deserved(I know I wasn’t the only grandchild that experienced this joy), but I never remember Papa telling me I couldn’t have more. And when I wasn’t into the goodies, I loved helping him type or run the register or pretend on the adding machine. One thing about Papa… He was always willing to let me try (even when he probably didn’t want to). A gentle, patient man!

Papa loved his coffee and newspaper, then BlueBell ice cream at night while watching the 10:00 news. If he could get away from the drugstore, Lunch was usually a sandwich and Fritos. Oh... can’t forget the bread and butter… it went with every meal!

He liked being a pharmacist and loved visiting with all his regular customers on a personal level… I made many delivery trips with him after closing time and I believe he made several house calls at night over the years. This love he had inspired me to follow in his footsteps.
When he wasn’t working at the drugstore, he was usually at home doing lawn work. And I think all of us grandkids had our fair share of riding on the yellow Cub Cadet. Not mowing!... Just riding for hours of fun. And if he got home and had to go retrieve it from the pasture where we ran out of gas, he did, without a harsh word. He’d just shrug his shoulders and make that clicking noise with his tongue.

Many trips to Showbiz, even though he wasn’t that crazy about pizza. He was just that kind of “go with the flow” type of guy.

T.V. for him consisted of sports or news, unless the grandkids wanted to watch a movie and he was up for whatever.

He was a wonderful husband… I just remember Mimi always had him running by the grocery on the way home for work.. I remember him doing dishes after dinners… And then when Mimi got sick, he took such good care of her because he loved her so much. His heart has been broken every since she left us almost 5 years ago. He has made the long trip to visit her grave and his sister, Mary, every chance he could.

He always had animals he liked to care for… Collie dogs, cats, doves and then there was the beloved Bitsy.

Papa taught me how to drive way before I could touch the pedals… I always wanted to go with him in the VW beetle because I knew he would let me sit in his lap and steer. In recent years, if you got in the car with Papa, you better buckle up and hold on… I think his foot got heavier over the years or the Houston drivers were rubbing off on him.

Grandparent’s weekend /Football game cheering on that favorite burnt orange team with me… Attended my pharmacy graduation… Places I felt I was following in his footsteps and it felt so good.

Funny birthday cards that I didn’t always get… He had a funny sense of humor sometimes.
He wiggled his ears like no one I’ve ever seen… We were always amazed and entertained by this unusual talent.

Just last month when Rebecca, Will and I were able to come visit one weekend, he posed with Santa. How many 85 year olds agree to do that in public?

These are really just a few of the wonderful, funny, quirky, awesome things about our Papa.
Although I was not ready for you to leave us, Papa… I have peace knowing you can breath really good now. Thank you for all you taught me and all the memories I have with you…

I love you forever...
Jennifer

Funnies

My sweet children can say the funniest things, as most do, but I too often forget to go write their funnies down.
Tonight while tucking E in bed, he said "Mommy, I get to go to school when I turn 6" and I said "yes, but Mommy's going to be sad when you go to school." His response: "You can go to church and have a party with your ladies."
And the other night, I had both boys in town with me, doing last minute back-to-school errands and Will is trying to find a place to eat by looking at signs. He names off TB, McD's and then he throws out there.. "We can go to Jack POPS The Box." (I laughed so hard at that one, I don't think I would forget it but wanted to document anyway)
Two SILLY, FUNNY BOYS!!!

Cherishing Alone Time

I just love quiet time to myself every once and awhile. Daddy came home early this afternoon to take Will to a Rangers game. E-Man and I opted to hang around the house and go to bed early. Goal accomplished so far.. E was in bed at 7:15, after reading 3 books, singing several songs and saying prayers..and, best of all, he hasn't been up once..YES!!

Today was another great day for W at school but he came home dragging. After being out late tonight, I hope tomorrow isn't a bad one.

Haven't gone anywhere today.. Was able to check more off my list and that makes me always feel productive. Charlie thinks that's so silly but why is it SO TRUE!?

Now for some quiet Mommy time ;)

Midweek Report

Ahhhhh.. What an awesome beginning of the day.. Rain last night cooled things off unbelievably.. in the low 70's..WOW! I drank my coffee outside while watching Eli ride his bike in the driveway. So thankful for the rain and cooler weather, just afraid we're being teased.. It's August in TX!!

This week is flying! Almost day 4 of school and Will still seems to be enjoying himself, actually a little too much.?? When he got home the 1st day, he told me, "First grade is much better than Kindergarten". The second day he came home and was so excited they actually went to 2 recesses but then complained because they had to go in the second time because of rain. This morning, he wanted so badly to take his football so he could play with all his buddies at recess. He wasn't so happy with me when I told him I had to email his teacher and make sure it was ok first.(She wrote me back and said it was legal, so Mr. W is going to be a happy camper tomorrow). I just hope he's going to learn something this year.. HA!! I really have no doubt about that, because he's got a super teacher this year.

A couple of rough days with Mr. E. For some reason he has refused to nap 2 days in a row.. Not like him! Please Lord, Don't let this be the end of naptime for us.. I look so forward every day to that down time!!

Tonight was Will's first practice for Fall coach pitch. WooHoo..Ready for some more baseball!
